Last summer, Walt and I had the incredible opportunity to step behind the scenes at the Hy-Vee IndyCar Weekend at Iowa Speedway in Newton, Iowa. The air was still buzzing with excitement from the race we’d just witnessed—where Will Power clinched a sensational victory—and we couldn’t wait to dive deeper into the world of IndyCar racing. Armed with curiosity and a camera, we took a first-person view (FPV) tour of the garages right after the checkered flag dropped. Here’s a glimpse into what we discovered during this unforgettable experience.
The Post-Race Pulse of the Garages
There’s something electric about being in the garages after a race. The grandstands might quiet down, but behind those garage doors, the energy is still palpable. As we stepped inside, we were greeted by the sights and sounds of a well-oiled machine—quite literally. Teams were in full swing, cleaning up, breaking down equipment, and packing away their gear with the kind of precision you’d expect from crews who live and breathe racing.
The hustle and bustle was mesmerizing. Tools clinked, crew members shouted instructions over the hum of machinery, and the faint smell of fuel and rubber lingered in the air. It was a rare peek into the less glamorous but equally vital side of IndyCar racing—the grind that keeps these teams at the top of their game.

Exclusive Access to a High-Energy World
What made this tour so special was the access. As fans, we’re used to watching the cars tear around the track or catching glimpses of drivers on the podium. But standing in the garages, surrounded by the heart of the operation, offered a perspective that’s rarely seen. We weaved between toolboxes, spare tires, and intricately designed car parts, marveling at the level of detail that goes into every race weekend.
The teams were gracious, letting us capture the chaos and camaraderie up close. You could feel the adrenaline still coursing through the space, even as they shifted gears from race mode to wrap-up mode. It was a reminder that IndyCar isn’t just about the drivers—it’s a symphony of engineers, mechanics, and strategists all working in sync.

A Victory to Remember
Of course, the backdrop to our tour was Will Power’s standout performance. His win at Iowa Speedway that day was nothing short of thrilling, and being in the garages afterward felt like an extension of that excitement. The garages were abuzz with chatter about the race—some teams celebrating, others already analyzing what could’ve been. For Walt and me, it was the perfect capstone to an incredible weekend of speed and spectacle.
